The World On Time

I like FedEx, they delivered my parcel right on time, from across the other side of the world and it didn't cost too much or take to long to get delivered either.  This along with the fact that FedEx is a company noted for its charity work, which was especially exemplified in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated large parts of Mississippi.  FedEx delivered nearly 500 tons of relief aid all of which was done basically for no charge.  This I thought deserved of me to make a web page about them.

Founded in 1971 by Frederick. W. Smith, Federal Express is one of the largest parcel delivery companies in the world, with a work force of over 140,000 delivering more than 3 ½ million packages every day by 44,000 vehicles with the help of 677 aircraft.

It was in 1971 when multimillionaire Fred Smith bought an aircraft company in Little Rock, Arkansas to begin an overnight parcel delivery service within the USA.  It all took a little while to set up and it wasn't until 1973 that the Federal Express Corporation became operational from its HQ in Memphis, Tennessee.

Federal Express didn't start showing any real profitability until around 1976 when the business really took off with the help of such advertisements as "We are a freight service company with 550-mile-per-hour delivery trucks ! " that helped to secure the delivery of over 19,000 parcels every day within the USA, rendering $3 and a half million dollars per annum.

In 1977, rival parcel delivery company UPS suffered from a major strike by employees and along with REA Express going into receivership gave FedEx an incredible boost in sales to $110 million dollars.  It was at this time too that FedEx started to use the large Boeing 727 aircraft after the US Government relaxed airline regulations and legislation for private companies.

In 1978, FedEx floated itself on the New York Stock Exchange and in rolled the share holders that bolstered security and revenues for the company as a whole.  In 1979 the company again increased its margins of operation by utilizing a centralized computer tracking system called COSMOS.  This system helped FedEx by allowing the the tracking of parcels, delivery vehicles, routes, employees and also the weather was monitored.  This along with the latest technology at the time called DADS which was a digitally assisted dispatch system that allowed customers to request pickups of their consignments.

The company continued to successfully expand with this new technology at its disposal so that 65,000 parcels from 90 US cities were being delivered daily. With TV advertisement campaigns that stated " FedEx: When it absolutely positively has to be there overnight " the company launched its overnight mail service to also include deliveries to Canada.  By 1983 sales were topping out at over $1 Billion dollars, expansion also continued with the acquisition of several smaller companies that helped to double sales to $2 Billion dollars by 1985.

FedEx continued to expand, buying out other deliver companies and increased its operation with the inclusion of a service quality program which closely monitored lost parcels, wrong addresses and other delivery errors so that they could be rectified quickly to the original customers satisfaction.  By 1987, $4 Billion Dollars was the annual sales figure.

In 1989 FedEx bought Tiger International Inc for $885 Million dollars, the Tiger delivery service known as the "Flying Tigers" had many runway rights and licenses in many major airports in Asia, Europe and South America, so the acquisition of the company was seen as a great asset.

43% of the worlds parcel delivery market was owned by FedEx in 1990, whilst close rival UPS owned 26%.  By 1992 sales were at over $7 Billion Dollars.
