
| Cooking a steak need not be as problematic and time
consuming as first thought, on this page I present a quick and easy way
to cook a steak dinner at home. Grilled steak is nicer but at home
it is more convenient to fry the steak in a frying pan. You will need 1 big steak, I normally have a 16 to 25 ounce steak bought from the butchers or fresh pre-packed ones from the supermarket.
Method: Add a tablespoon of cooking oil into a frying pan and bring it up to heat. Don't boil the oil as it will quickly burn the steak, we need it to be medium hot to slow fry the steak. Place the steak into the frying pan for 5 seconds then turn it over, this will seal both sides nicely. Continue to fry and keep turning the steak every minute so that it gets equal amounts of heat, this will cook the steak throughout to give a lovely even color right through. ![]() Add sliced garlic segments and whatever seasoning you prefer to the steak as it fries, this will cook-in the seasoning. Seasoning suggestions: 3 teaspoons of garlic granules, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, ginger powder or rosemary and thyme or coriander, cumin or paprika. Cooking time will depend on how you like your steak and is open to controversy but by and large. 5 seconds p/s (per side) will render extremely rare, 10 seconds p/s will render very rare, 1 minutes p/s will render rare, 2 to 3 minutes p/s will render medium rare, 4 to 5 minutes p/s will render medium to well done, 6 to 8 minutes p/s and over will render well done. Be careful not to over-cook the steak as it will be too tough to enjoy as a good steak should be succulent and juicy. ![]() Chop up the onion and fry in very hot oil for 5 minutes in a separate pan until caramelized into a nice light golden brown. Microwave or boil the mushrooms to reduce them, taking out much of their water content then add to the onions and fry for a couple more minutes. You can also add some seasoning of garlic or mixed spices at this point, frying-it-in to embellish the flavors more. Pour the oxtail soup into a saucepan and bring to a simmer, don't boil as it will render out the flavor. When the onions and mushrooms are cooked add them to the soup, stir well in and cook for 2 minutes. Place the steak on a plate and pour the oxtail gravy-sauce over the steak. You will be surprised at how well this gravy-sauce compliments the steak ! Accompaniments and condiments: ![]() You may cook some fries and peas separately to have with your meal, as these best accompany a nice steak. Serve with horseradish sauce, French, German or English mustard or cranberry sauce on the side. A chilled glass of beer or two or a good full bodied red wine at room temperature is also recommended.
